BUDGET APP

The budget and savings app that keeps itself up to date

Most budget apps turn you into a bookkeeper. You set up the categories yourself, then log every expense, every week, forever. Sparsom does the same job, but reads the numbers itself.

How it works

Sparsom connects to your bank and reads the transactions. Everything below is what the app does with them.

  • AI assistant

You can ask the app about your own numbers and get the answer calculated from your transactions, not from an average.

  • Sparsom score

A score from 0 to 100 that shows where you stand. In the demo on the front page, week 13 is at 74.

  • Weekly summary

Every Sunday, Sparsom goes through the week that just ended and sends one number for the next. In the demo it is 4,949 kr, which is 707 kr a day.

  • Payday mode

On the day your salary arrives, Sparsom suggests a budget for the period and how to split the amount. The demo's payday is day 25 of the month.

  • Behaviour alerts

If your spending pattern changes, the app tells you while the week is still running instead of afterwards.

  • Savings goals

You can set a goal on your own or invite others to save towards the same thing. The demo has one shared goal with 2 others.

  • Weekly and monthly history

Every week and every month joins a series you can read backwards, and it builds from the first week. The demo's series is 6 weeks long.

Four jobs you can skip

Each of them is work a typical budget app puts on you, not on the app. Sparsom reads the transactions and does the job itself.

  • No setting up categories

Food, transport, subscriptions, clothes, going out, and then everything that fits none of them. The setup takes an evening before you have a single number back.

  • No guessing the amounts

How much SHOULD you spend on groceries? The first number is a guess, and most people stop adjusting it after a couple of months.

  • No logging expenses

In other apps you either enter your expenses yourself or correct the categories the app gets wrong. That work comes back every week. Sparsom reads it from the transactions instead.

  • No maintaining the plan

A budget you set up in January fits poorly in March, and a category you have overspent stays red for the rest of the month. Keeping the plan current is your job, every week, forever.

Sparsom does the same job, automatically

Sparsom sets the limit and tells you what to do with it. The difference from a typical budget app is that you never have to keep it up.

  • The limit is calculated, not guessed

Sparsom reads the transactions that already exist and sets the amount you can safely spend until next Sunday. In the demo on the front page it is 4,949 kr for the week, which is 707 kr a day.

  • Fixed charges find themselves

Subscriptions and regular payments are picked out of your account history. The demo shows 3 that have gone unused for 90 days, 358 kr a month in total.

  • You get one step, and a goal to measure it against

The weekly report ends with one concrete thing you can do next week, and shows what it does for your savings goal. In the demo, a no-spend weekend moves Feriefondet from 82 to 86%.

Questions about budgets and budget apps

How do I make a budget?

You set up a budget like this: gather your income, split your expenses into categories and set an amount per category that adds up to less than your income. The hard part is not the setup but keeping it up to date month after month. Sparsom does that job for you and recalculates the limit every week, based on what you actually spent.

Is there a free budget template?

Yes, both banks and consumer organisations hand out spreadsheets you can fill in yourself. A template is free in money and expensive in time: it requires you to enter the numbers and keep them updated. Sparsom is built for people who have tried a template and stopped maintaining it.

Is there a free budget app?

Several budget apps have a free version, and your bank usually includes a simple overview in its online banking. Sparsom has a free trial, but no permanent free tier. The app has not launched yet, so you can join the waitlist and hear when it opens.

Is Sparsom a budget app?

Sparsom does the job a budget app does, but automatically. It reads your transactions, works out what you have left until next Sunday, keeps track of your savings goals and suggests one concrete step. You do not have to set up categories or log expenses yourself. The weeks and months build up into a history you can read backwards, so the pattern over time is as visible as the number for the week you are in.

What is the difference between a budget app and Sparsom?

The maintenance, and that is a bigger difference than it sounds. A typical budget app is a spreadsheet with an interface around it. You create the categories yourself and set a cap for each of them. Then you correct the categorisation the app gets wrong, week after week. The setup takes an evening, and the maintenance is a quarter of an hour a week that nobody has set aside. Stop putting in that quarter of an hour, and the budget is left as a plan from the last time anyone could be bothered to update it. A cap set in January knows nothing about the electricity bill going up in February, or about you changing jobs in March, and a red number measured against an outdated cap tells you nothing you can use. Sparsom goes the other way. It reads the transactions from your bank and works out what you can safely spend until next Sunday. The amount is recalculated every week, from what you actually spent the week before. You get the number and one concrete step, and the weeks and months build up into a history you can read backwards.

Do I have to connect my bank?

Yes, and it takes a couple of minutes. The connection runs under the Payment Services Directive (PSD2): you approve it with your bank’s own authentication, and Neonomics AS is the licensed intermediary that retrieves the account data. The access is read-only, so Sparsom cannot move money. What is stored and for how long is set out in the privacy policy.
